Other Cool News: The Last Airbender

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Mastering the Elements

“The Last Airbender”? Let’s hope so, though there is a scene at the very end that gestures toward a sequel. After 94 minutes — was that all? I could have sworn it was days — of muddy 3-D imagery and muddled storytelling, the idea that this is just the first “Last Airbender” seems either delusionally optimistic or downright cruel. An astute industry analyst of my acquaintance, who is 9 and an admirer of the Nickelodeon animated series on which the movie is based, offered a two-word diagnosis of its commercial prospects on the way out of the theater: “They’re screwed.”

Other Cool News: 'Invisible' dress lets you see all the way through

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat We've seen this trick before, but it was done with a Halloween costume. This invisibility Dress takes that idea much further, with a live video camera in the back shooting video that's displayed on the front. But this is where we enter the realm of fantasy — there's a big differece between mentioning the words "textile-based display" and actually sewing such a thing into a dress.

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Get ready, fans - Twilight will be back on the silver screen in 2011.

Reuters reports (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6444TE20100505) that Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the movies, announced Wednesday that the film version of the final teen-vampire book in the four-part Twilight series is slated for a November 18, 2011 release in the US. But will the finale, Breaking Dawn, be broken into two parts (similar to what's happening with the final Harry Potter book's film adaptation)? Nobody knows.

Other Cool News: REVIEW: ‘How To Train Your Dragon’
Posted by WayaGola
on Sunday, March 28 2010 @ 06:15:28 PST  (42 reads)
Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Kids movies always have one major caveat: they are predictable. The unsung hero will prove him, or her, self at the behest of a whole bunch of non-believers and in the end be triumphant. Think “Shrek,” “Harry Potter,” “Star Wars,” “Lord of the Rings,” the list goes on and on. “How To Train Your Dragon” is yet another entry in this time tested genre and draws heavily from each of those films.

Thankfully, because everyone can figure out where the film is going from the first five minutes, “How To Train Your Dragon” has plenty of things to distinguish it and therefore make it worthwhile.

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Reports are going wild on the Internet that the final ‘Twilight’ installment will be in two films, according to MTV. The studio is staying quiet and not leaving comments.

The final installment in the ‘Harry Potter’ films will be split into two parts to fit everything in and now ‘Twilight’ fans have suspected for a while that the final ‘Breaking Dawn’ will be the same way.

Other Cool News: The Next Harry Potter? Fox Options Fantasy Series 'Incarceron'

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Sometimes I wish I was a kid again. I grew up in a cinematic climate that was decidedly lacking in fantasy film franchises. Sure, we had a few great singular films to fall back on from time to time, but Hollywood wasn't throwing money hand over fist at every popular young-adult literary franchise that came along in the hopes of finding the next big thing. Us adults might not be fans of all the Percy Jacksons that come our way, but kids who love the multiplex should be in heaven these days.

Other Cool News: Review: 'Percy Jackson' is no Harry Potter
Posted by WayaGola
on Monday, February 15 2010 @ 10:17:25 PST  (49 reads)
Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Somewhere at Hogwarts School a wizard is working on a powerful anti-mimicry spell. "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" echoes J.K. Rowling's mythological world so closely, with its magical young half-bloods and crowded canvas of supporting deities, that a hex must be brewing.

Percy, a teenage New Yorker, discovers that his long-absent father, a "dazzling" guy who vanished after impregnating his mom, was none other than Poseidon, god of the sea. (There are a lot of guys on the Jersey shore imitating Greek gods; this one meant it.)

Other Cool News: Tom Felton Joins Ashley Greene In 'The Apparition'

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat It's like a little coming together party of actors and actresses from the biggest teen hits nowadays: first "Twilight's" Ashley Greene, then "Gossip Girl's" Sebastian Stan and now "Harry Potter's" Tom Felton have all signed on to star in the supernatural thriller, "The Apparition."

Shock Till You Drop announced today that the man best known for playing Harry Potter's archnemesis Draco Malfoy will take his first leading role as the main character, Patrick. We're assuming Ashley Greene is playing his girlfriend, a character named Kelly in this film, while Sebastian is playing postgrad Ben who's trying to figure out what to do next with his life.

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Devotees of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” books (Disney/Hyperion) are gearing up to see their beloved hero and his escapades re-imagined as a feature film. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (PG), a live-action adventure/fantasy adapted from the first novel (2005), premieres in theaters on February 12, 2010.

Director Chris Columbus is no stranger to bringing blockbuster books for young people to the big screen, having overseen the first two installments of the “Harry Potter” series for Warner Bros. (2001’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets). Presented by 20th Century Fox, The Lightning Thief looks to be packed with fast-paced suspense and thrilling visual effects.

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Robert Pattinson rose from actor who died in a Harry Potter movie to 'demi god' with his role as Edward Cullen in Twilight. Now the series is at the third movie (coming June 30, 2010) and it's rumoured that the last book will be two movies. But what about after? What can be the next big thing for Robert after Twilight is over. I have a suggestion.

Other Cool News: Breaking Dawn Going In The Fall?

on Monday, January 25 2010 @ 18:54:03 PST  (29 reads)
Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat According to a report in the LA Times the fourth and final (thank god) book in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn, could begin production in the fall for a 2011 release. According to producer Wyck Godfrey, it is unclear if the final installment is going to be one film or if it is going to go the Harry Potter route and split the final book into 2 films. He states that not much else will be known until Melissa Rosenberg finishes the script. The other interesting part of the report is in regards to the character of Bella’s half-human, half-vampire daughter:

Other Cool News: Will ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief’ achieve ‘Harry Potte

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series has enjoyed a great stay of success in the Best Seller listing arena over the past few years, and the first book The Lightning Thief still hovers at the 32nd spot for this week.

The Lightning Thief - the first of a five-part series - introduces "Percy Jackson," a boy who happens to be, unknowingly at first, a demigod (the son of Poseidon, in fact) and sets him on a quest to salvage peace for his ancestry.

Other Cool News: Twilight not a healthy fantasy

Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat (UNEDITED) Pre-teen girls and teenage girls, even grown women, will tell you that it's just a simple obsession just like Harry Potter or Star Wars, when in fact these women are as obsessed over the Twilight Saga and all, just like Bella is obsessed and infatuated with Edward. This fictional novel has spread the idea to millions of women that they will soon find their young and handsome "Edward", fall in love, and live happily ever after. This is incorrect. Love is not the word to describe this novel or the feelings that the young women would like to feel. The better word to use is infatuation or complete obsession.

Other Cool News: Fox saves 'Narnia' from Disney
Posted by WayaGola
on Friday, February 06 2009 @ 09:38:38 PST  (88 reads)
Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Twentieth Century Fox yesterday swooped in like a fantasy novel's knight in shining armor to save "The Chronicles of Narnia." The company signed on to co-produce "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," the third film in the series based on the beloved children's novels by C.S. Lewis.

The franchise's future had been in doubt when Disney last month dropped the series it had co-produced with Walden Media. Walden - owned by conservative Christian businessman Philip Anschutz and responsible for smaller-scale family hits including "Because of Winn-Dixie" and "Nim's Island" - owns the rights to the seven-book series.

Other Cool News: An Entertaining Potter Stop-Gap
Posted by WayaGola
on Friday, January 23 2009 @ 08:55:08 PST  (97 reads)
Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat Many Harry Potter fans — myself included — were, to say the least, annoyed that the release of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was moved from November 2008 to July 2009. Fortunately, “Inkheart,” which brings an interesting story accented by funny performances to the big screen, serves as a satisfactory appetizer to the highly anticipated sixth installment. (The filmmakers know precisely who they’re targeting. The lone preview preceding the film in press screenings was for “Half-Blood Prince.”)

The film, based on the fantasy novel by Cornelia Funke, stars Brendan Fraser as Mo Folchart, a bookbinder by profession, but a silvertongue by fate: when he reads stories aloud, characters and items from the stories can enter the real world. This gift is revealed at the film’s beginning, as Mo reads to his baby daughter and shares a quiet evening with his wife. Fast forward a bit more than one decade: Mo and his now adolescent daughter Meggie arrive at a shop in Europe that specializes in old books. Mo’s wife, Resa, (Sienna Guillory) is not with them.

Other Cool News: The secret history of why Disney dumped 'Narnia'
Posted by WayaGola
on Friday, January 23 2009 @ 08:52:50 PST  (69 reads)
Other Cool News not necessarily HP relat On the night before Christmas, when all of Hollywood was in Aspen or Hawaii on vacation, Disney quietly announced that it was bailing out on the "Chronicles of Narnia" franchise that the studio had co-financed and co-produced with Phil Anschutz's Walden Media. I was blissfully snoozing on the beach when the story broke in the trades myself, so it was only after I started analyzing Disney's 2008 for our continuing Studio Report Card series that I realized what a shocker it was. Totaled together, the first two "Narnia" films grossed nearly $1.2 billion around the world, making it one of the most successful box-office franchises in recent years.

So why would Disney walk away from such a valuable property? The back story is complicated, to say the least. The obvious reason was that compared to the astounding success of the first film, 2005's "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," which amassed nearly $750 million in global business, the second film in the series, 2008's "Prince Caspian," was a big disappointment, grossing roughly $420 million. Still, $420 million is nothing to sneeze at, being way more money than any Disney film, except for "Wall-E," made all year.
