Harry Potter General: Is Harry Potter stamp un-American?
Posted by WayaGola
on Friday, November 22 2013 @ 09:52:41 PST  (515 reads)
General Harry Potter News (CNN) -- First, immigrants steal Americans' jobs. And now foreigners are stealing Americans' rightful place on U.S. postage stamps!
OK, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. But a new line of Harry Potter stamps released this week by the U.S. Postal Service has outraged some stamp enthusiasts. As the former head of the American Philatelic Society (that's a stamp collecting society to the rest of us) noted: "Harry Potter is not American. It's foreign, and it's so blatantly commercial it's off the charts."

Harry Potter Movies: Watching Harry Potter Enhances Creativity
Posted by WayaGola
on Friday, November 22 2013 @ 09:50:26 PST  (481 reads)
News on any Harry Potter Movie Halloween, with its witches and ghouls and talking foxes, might just be the most creative day of the year.

"Magic -- the very word seems to reveal a world of mysterious and unexpected possibilities!" the Polish anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski wrote in 1925. Magical phenomena, by definition, are impossible in the real world. Inanimate objects coming to life, people casting spells, being literally possessed to sing "Day-O." In the realm of fantasy, constraints are broken and nearly anything can happen.

General Harry Potter News While the Butterbeer you can get from a Starbucks might not be an official Harry Potter brand, that's really beside the point!
The point is, if you're craving one of Hogwarts' most delicious beverages, and you're not anywhere near somewhere magical, you can TOTALLY tailor your drink at a local Starbucks to get one!!

The story will focus on the book's fictitious author, Newt Scamander, and is anticipated to be the first in a series.

Harry Potter marketing used to prop up child slavery
Posted by WayaGola
on Wednesday, July 10 2013 @ 08:22:47 PDT  (522 reads)
General Harry Potter News Some writes Potter fans might want to check out what Warner Brothers is up to: marketing Harry Potter schwag that's probably made with child slavery, refusing to source their chocolate from slavery-free sources, and refusing to comment on the miserable failure of their supplier to meet basic human rights standards.

Harry might have his hands too full with Voldemort to get into this, but you can bet Hermione wouldn't sit still for an instant.

What about us? What can Potter-watchers do against real-life Death Eaters like these?

1) Sign a petition to WB at: http://www.democrats.com/organize?registration_prompt#cid=ZGVtczk3Mzc5MmRlbXM%3D

2) How about we write to alert JK Rowling to this abuse of Harry's good name? She authorized the franchise-- does she have any say over how they use it now? I think she should! Rowling's PR is handled by Nicky Stonehill and Rebecca Salt at the email address: hello@stonehillsalt.co.uk

Note: This was submitted anonymously, so I did some checking on it... there is a petition out there but I have no idea who organizes and owns democrats.com.

http://www.democrats.com/harry-potter-chocolates

I did find plenty of web sites mentioning this but not one actual news story from any accredited organization... figured I'd allow the submission with a warning that "Not everything you see on the web is necessarily true or accurate..."

Harry Potter General: 5 Life Lessons
Posted by WayaGola
on Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 18:18:02 PDT  (710 reads)
General Harry Potter News The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling is considered to be one of the most beloved stories of all time. For the non-Potterheads, Harry Potter is the story of the boy wizard who does the impossible. As a baby, he escapes unharmed from the dark lord Voldemort. With his parents dead, he lives with his non-magical aunt and uncle until age 11. On his eleventh birthday he receives his invitation to attend Hogwarts. Upon realizing he is a wizard, he attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he meets his two best friends, Ron and Hermione, and his mentor, Professor Dumbledore. He finally realizes the significance of defeating Voldemort and spends the next six years in a battle to the death, which proves to be much more complicated than anticipated. To get the full story and the greatness that is Harry Potter, I strongly recommend reading the books.

With Your Help, Free Harry Potter University Course Could Go Global Online
Posted by WayaGola
on Monday, May 06 2013 @ 07:55:38 PDT  (730 reads)
General Harry Potter News Some writes No Harry Potter University Courses in your area? No Problem!

https://moocfellowship.org/submissions/harry-potter-and-issues-in-international-politics

A group of professors from universities in the U.S. and Mexico have submitted an innovative Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) proposal on Harry Potter and Issues in International Politics in a competition to win an E.U. fellowship. If they win the competition - run by iversity and Stifterverband, Germany to produce creative, high-standard online university courses – it will allow tens of thousands of people around the world to study the real-world political issues raised by J.K. Rowling’s stories for free at their own pace regardless of where they live. You won’t even need an apparition test… through their interactive videos, and online assignments and activities, the four course professors will transport this virtual version of Hogwarts straight to your desktop!

MOOCs have been running online since 2008 bringing a wide range courses from top universities freely to hundreds of thousands of students worldwide. It's the closest thing to virtual apparition we have in education to date and has revolutionized the way we now understand and practice teaching and learning in higher education.

This course relates themes in the Harry Potter series to international political issues involving national identity (Contemporary Transfiguration), technology and the future (Divination), terrorism (Defence Against the Real Dark Arts) and the global media (Charms). It’s full of interactive videos and creative group assignments that students can work on individually or together through Facebook or Google + Hangout. It also involves multiple choice tests, quizzes and essays that reflect the high international academic standards of the best existing MOOCs already out there. The course is introductory undergraduate-level, so the only things you’ll need are competent written English skills, an interest in issues in international politics, and a good knowledge of the Harry Potter stories before term starts.

And the best news is that we can help to make it happen! To turn this proposal into a reality, just go to the link, watch the short introductory course video, take a second or two to vote through facebook, share and be a part of the magic of the future of global education.

Voting ends on May 23rd 2013 and if the course wins the fellowship, it will run online in late 2013 or early 2014.

General Harry Potter News Universal Studios in Hollywood will raze the 41-year-old Gibson Amphitheatre to make way for its coming Harry Potter attraction, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Also slated to fall under the advancing march of the boy wizard is Universal's Adventures of Curious George. The playland's current features include a 500-gallon water dump and flying foam balls.

General Harry Potter News KISSIMMEE, nothing. -- The way Alex Benepe remembers it, his roommate's idea to make quidditch more than a broom-riding fantasy confined to books and the big screen began as only a passing thought as they stared out their dorm window at the vast field known as "Battell Beach."

He and Xander Manshel were freshmen at Middlebury College in Vermont in 2005, staring at the field ironically named in the chilly, landlocked state. Manshel was bored with the Sunday tradition of bocce ball and was looking for a change.
